A Real Life Social Engineering Attempt - Be Aware!

If you are a small business be aware of all the different ways you can be attacked. I have listed a few stats below but here is a real life issue that just came upon me two days ago. I put a LinkedIn post about an offering I have available to my customers. I have a landing page for this solution that the company I work with built for me. Shortly after posting this solution on LinkedIn and providing a link for the landing page where a business can enter their info in order to sign up for a demo, I got almost 30 emails for a response starting at 1:40AM, exactly one every minute for 30 minutes, with a made up name, company, email and phone. The emails were all from a Gmail account and all had the exact same format, last name, then first name followed by one random letter followed by "@gmail.com". Clearly this was a form of social engineering that was created by a bot where they wanted me to respond so they can build up a dialogue followed by an attempt to get critical info from me. Please be careful, it can come from anywhere folks. Be on your guard as a small business!

Some concerning stats...

  • 61% of SMBs were the target of a Cyberattack in 2021.

  • Employees of small businesses experience 350% more social engineering attacks than those at larger enterprises.

  • Small businesses receive the highest rate of targeted malicious emails at one in 323.

  • 75% of SMBs could not continue operating if they were hit with ransomware.

  • 55% of people in the U.S. would be less likely to continue doing business with companies that are breached.

Small business is an easy target because they are the least secured. If you only have a firewall and some antivirus software, you are NOT protected against a cyberattack. And please don't think you are too small for a hacker to find you, because they will, or actually, their bot will, then they will come after you personally. The bot is like a bird dog, they sniff out the prey and then the hunter is there with the gun to finish off the job. Don't fall prey, protect yourself today, not tomorrow for it may be too late by then. Also realize that you are not just protecting your business but other businesses that you work with, as somoe of their their info is probably on your computer. Reach out to us atter Genesis Business Advisors and we can set up a free consultation with a cybersecurity specialist to determine if you are protected against these criminals.
